Mathematics

At St Alfege and St Peter’s we aim to create a positive attitude towards Maths so that pupils have the confidence to apply their mathematical skills in real life situations. The New Primary Framework for Mathematics provides the structure for the daily maths lessons. There are seven strands of learning:

  • Using and applying mathematics
  • Counting and understanding number
  • Knowing and using number facts
  • Calculating
  • Understanding shape
  • Measuring
  • Handling data

In Key Stage 1 children are taught in their year groups. In Key Stage 2 children are taught in four ability teams named after famous mathematicians – Archimedes, Pythagoras, Newton and Einstein.

In each lesson there is an emphasis on developing mental skills, and children are encouraged to discuss the use of different strategies for problem solving. A wide range of resources is used, including ICT.
